AmeriCorps Benefits Package: $13,399 living allowance, VISTAs will have access to relocation assistance, child care, health benefits, 10 days of annual leave and 10 days of medical leave. Also at the end of the service year VISTA members will have the option of selecting an education award or a cash stipend.
General Function: Building Volunteer Process for Improving Literacy Program
Goal of the Project: To help ensure that children of 1st through 3rd grade from low-income communities receive the education support they need to break the cycle of poverty in the future, the VISTA project will build the capacity to preform one-on-one sessions by developing a sustainable volunteer recruitment and management system for its volunteering program at NBE.
Duties Include: Assess the current state of Rapides Parish School Board and City of Alexandria efforts in reaching, selecting, and supporting volunteers, and create policies, procedures, and documents to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of the volunteer recruitment and matching system. Set up outreach systems and build partnerships with community organizations in order to spread the word about the mentor program. Develop targeted marketing materials. Coordinate with Rapides Parish School Board and local school to write a curriculum for improving reading literacy. Assess the current progress of volunteer recruitment and curriculum to determine impact of progress.
Minimum Applicant Qualifications:
Applicants must be at least 18 years or older.
College graduate preferred; supplemented by education and experience involving marketing, curriculum development, and community projects involving Children/Youth, Education, Community Outreach.
Possess experience in Community Organization, Recruitment, Youth Development, Teaching/Tutoring, General Skills, Education, Communications.
Must possess a valid driver’s license
