SUMMARY:UWCL Summer of Service
DESCRIPTION:United Way of Central Louisiana is excited to say that this 
 summer’s Summer of Service program is funded by a Youth Volunteer Summ
 er Service Grant from The Rapides Foundation. As part of the grant\, we 
 are implementing the Youth Volunteer Corps model to engage youth in team
 -based service experiences that build life and work skills while inspiri
 ng a lifetime ethic of service. Also\, we are excited to grow and suppor
 t our partnerships with Louisiana Christian University and the Alexandri
 a Housing Authority.  \n\nSummer of Service Focus\n\nThis summer’s Sum
 mer of Service program goal is to focus on building up our local communi
 ties to be better together. This summer we are focusing on two communiti
 es\, Louisiana Christian University\, and the Alexandria Housing Authori
 ty. We know that to grow as a community\, our focus should be on our you
 ng people by engaging them in meaningful activities to instill a sense o
 f community.\n\nOur goal for working with LCU is to show students what a
  college campus looks like\, and how a diverse group of people comes tog
 ether to become the Wild Cats.\n\nOur goal for working with AHA is to ha
 ve the youth at AHA become involved in improving resources at each of th
 e locations. Summer of Service helps local youths take pride in where th
 ey live\, to know that they have made a difference they can see\, and to
  grow closer as a community.  \n\nAchieving a sense of community at a yo
 ung age helps us to belong\, and if we belong then we want to care\; thu
 s\, if we belong and care about our local communities\, we can achieve g

  helping LCU with a few projects in our Summer of Service program. At LC
 U we will focus on getting the Student Union ready to welcome Freshmen t
 o their Front-line orientation. Our second date at LCU is Paws for Fall\
 , as we help get the campus ready to welcome students and give back to o
 ur community.  \n\n\nWild Cats Front Line Ready\nJune 6th – 8 am to 12
  noon.\n\nPrepare the Student Union to greet incoming freshmen with Wild
  Cats Front Line Ready! \n\n\nPaws for Fall\nJuly 18th – 8 am to 12 no
 on.\n\nNew Classes start in August\, let’s help the Wild Cats get read
 y to welcome students\, with Paws for Fall.  \n\n\nAlexandria Housing Au
 thority \nThis year’s summer of service program is focusing on AHA wit
 h a partnership\, to help bring the communities of the Housing Authority
  together. Youth will focus on community clean-up\, working on the commu
 nity gardens\, setting up/cleaning the on-site libraries\, and working t
 o set up both sharing pantries/closets.  \n\n\nReading Clubhouse  \nJune
  8th – 10 am to 2 pm. Location: Charles Hayward  \n\nLet’s come toge
 ther and set up our Community Library in the Reading Clubhouse. \n\n \nB
 ayou pick it up\, clean it up &amp\; share it up.\nJune 20th – 10 am t
 o 2 pm. Location: Bayou Garden  \n\n A community cleanup day and sharing
  closet setup.   \n\n \nCome\, clean like a Royal. \nJune 22nd – 10 am
  to 2 pm. Location: Royal Ridge \n\nA community cleanup day. \n\n\nSecon
 d Chance Sharing &amp\; Reading \nJuly 6th – 10 am to 2 pm. Location: 
 Harmony Village \n\nSetting up a sharing closet and Reading Clubhouse.  
 \n\n \nGarden Gate Keep Calm\, Keep Clean &amp\; Share On\nJuly 20th –
  10 am to 2 pm. Location: Garden Gate \n\nCommunity clean up and set up 
 of a shared closet.
